Greetings! My name is Carl Amurao. I’m 26 years old. I was born in Laguna, Philippines and my family and I moved to BC, Canada 6 years ago. I like cars, electronic devices, and working hands-on with them. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been fascinated by how appliances and electronic devices work. When I was 7 years old, I asked myself, “How come the fridge light bulb turns on when I open the door and turns off when I close it?”. My mind kept going back and forth between opening and closing the fridge door to understand how it works. Yes, at the age of 7! Learning how to use an electronic device became a seamless effort as a child. I often disassemble my robots, radios, and tape cassettes so I can rebuild them and understand their mechanics. I truly treasure these childhood memories of mine and I have realized that at such a young age, I’ve discovered my passion and interest in electronics.
In my professional life, I am a Red Seal certified field service technician from Best Buy Canada. In the past five years, I have specialized in repairing major appliances. The nature of this job makes it enjoyable because every problem and troubleshooting is unique. It keeps my mind active by learning everyday. Customer service is one of the natures of my work which I have been using as a pedestal to practice my communication skills. Communicating effectively is one of the challenges that I enjoyed and learned a lot from, since the field of work involves different people with diverse culture and personalities. I have also trained and helped a lot of students that are coming into the field during their college practical experience. I enjoyed training and learning from them. Providing them with repair techniques that I have learned in my experience. I am able to make a difference and motivate them which inspires me to become an instructor in the field I’m passionate about.
In addition, I'm an instructor at Vancouver Community College for a year now. I teach appliance repair course under Electronic Repair Technology Department. Being able to teach the students is a very fulfilling career. It is a two-way learning process. It is an honor to share my knowledge and passion to the industry which made me pursue Provincial Instructor Diploma Program to enhance and acquire effective teaching skills.
